The Pine School AP Physics Students Explore Light & Lasers, Apr 6, 2016
Light and lasers were taken outside of the Honor and AP physics classroom and explored at the IRSC Photonics Lab and FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI).
Collaboration among LASER-TEC, the Pine School, and HBOI provided an incredible opportunity for 24 high school students to explore real-life applications of optics and laser technology during a full-day field trip on April 6, 2016.
LASER-TEC team welcomed the group early morning at the IRSC photonics lab. Introductions and theory overview was followed by lots of hands-on activities. Construction of a beam steering assembly, alignment of a laser system, design of a museum security system using a laser and integrated photo alarm systems -- are just some of the projects investigated and completed by students from the Pine School.
Excited to learn more about laser applications, the group lead by their physics teacher Karlhainz Hass, headed to the FAU HBOI. They were greeted by the research scientists Dr. Fraser Dalgleish and Dr. Anni Vuorenkovski Dalgleish from the HBOI Ocean Engineering and Technology. Students’ afternoon was dedicated to exploration of underwater laser imaging, applications of LIDAR, active and passive optical systems, and ocean exploration technologies with various robotic platforms.
