Teacher Guide Resources
Lighten Up: Discovering Science of LightDescription: In collaboration with the Girl Scouts of the USA, the OSA Foundation developed a guide that introduces girls to basic concepts in optics and encourages the study of science. Topics include: the nature of light, spectrum, colors, reflection, refraction, lasers, optical fiber, possible career pathways, and career profiles of women in photonics.
Audience: For girls 11-15 year old Author: Pamela J. Walter Bruce T. Paddock, the OSA Foundation, Girl Scouts |
Optics: Light, Color and their UsesDescription: This guide contains activities using lenses, prisms and mirrors to create telescopes, periscopes, microscopes and kaleidoscopes. Other activities include finding focal length and understanding reflection, refraction and diffraction. Activities are marked by grade level.
Audience: Educators Level: Elementary, middle and high school Author: NASA |
Light: A Lab Manual for TeachersDescription: Developed with a grant from the OSA Foundation, this book was written for K-12 teachers and contains 30 ready-to-go labs, complete with answer key, as well as 10 demonstrations. Most of the activities can be conducted with common materials found at department or hardware stores, or easily ordered online.
Audience: Educators Level: Middle and high school Author: Mike McKee, CREOL, The College of Optics and Photonics University of Central Florida |
Science, Optics and You GuidebookDescription: Activities exploring light, color, and optics and accompanied by a teacher curriculum package. The program begins with basic information about lenses, shadows, prisms, and color, leading up to the use of sophisticated instruments scientists use to help them understand the world.
