OPEN Newsletter - February 2021

2/16/2021

Most of our member colleges are back to in-person instruction observing all CDC guidelines. Laser-photonics, fiber optics, artificial intelligence, and automation are creating cutting-edge applications solving problems while at the same time increasing productivity. Advanced technology companies are in expansion mode and looking forward to hiring our spring graduates.

In this issue of our newsletter, you can read about:

1)     The contribution of laser-photonics and the various technologies competing for the elusive goal of a level 5 self-driving car.

2)     Our newest college member: Southern University at Shreveport.

3)     The release of the 2021 edition of:
  • Light and Optics Experiment Book and Kit
  • Lasers in Medicine and Surgery

4)    Current job openings by city, state, and company can be found in the left column of the newsletter. Please share this information with your students.

5)     The Congressional Optics & Photonics Caucus Launch Event
(Brian Mast is a LASER-TEC and Florida representative and strong supporter).

6) Ideas for using Pi (π) Day as an opportunity for outreach and recruitment.

7)     Free webinars in laser and fiber optics from our friends at Springfield Technical Community College, MA.

8)     Planning for summer camps and resources available from LASER-TEC.

9)     Photonics programs at Lake Washington Institute of Technology, Kirkland, Washington.

All the best,

Chrys Panayiotou
