LASER-TEC joins the International Year of Light global initiative to raise awareness about light and light-based technologies which enable almost every technological innovation of the 21st century. Two free conferences, open to general public, with themes on lasers, infrared technologies, fiber optics, integrated photonics and laser-induced fusion were hosted on March 6, 2015 and June 11, 2015 at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Renowned speakers from the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Labs, Harris Corporation, Laser Components, and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute discussed the exciting applications of lasers and fiber optics in their fields. More than 120 participants attended each event and engaged the speakers in numerous interesting questions. Many middle and high school students attended with their parents and teachers.
The conference was followed by tours of the Photonics and Fiber Optics labs at Indian River State College, FL. Participants took home informational materials, posters, customized magnets, and stickers. LASER-TEC also awarded as “door prizes” 10 Light and Optics Exploration Kits, 2 portable DVD players, and 10 books “Celebrating Light: 50 Ways Light-Based Technologies Enrich our World”.
“New applications based on light science are constantly being invented, significantly expanding business and career opportunities in the future,” said Dr. Chrys Panayiotou, Director of LASER-TEC and IRSC Department Chair of Electronics Engineering Technology. “We are excited to celebrate the wonders of light-based technologies and bring awareness to the new generation of technicians, engineers and scientists.”
LASER-TEC continues expanding its outreach initiative and plans to host similar events in the future. The next event is scheduled in Washington DC on September 12, 2015. Stay tuned.
