Laser and Fiber Optics in Advanced Manufacturing - Professional Development Workshop - March 3, 2017
KCTCS System Office was the host site for AMTEC's Professional Development Workshop Series on March 3, 2017. The Southeast Regional Center for Laser and Fiber Optics' Director, Dr. Chrysanthos Panayiotou, presented an excellent workshop on the applications of lasers and fiber optics in the automotive, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing industries. Topics included metal cutting, welding, drilling, brazing, and laser safety. Additional topics included making complex metal parts using laser additive manufacturing, integrations of lasers in robotic systems, electro-optical sensors used in mechatronic systems, efficiencies, and other advantages of laser systems.
Industrial Maintenance Technical instructors and top students from Bluegrass, Danville, Georgetown, Somerset, Southeast, and Southcentral Community Colleges attended this event. Butch Tincher, Shawn Trivett, Adam Grigsby, Matt Beaulieu, Doug Herren, Stanley Theisen, Jason Grant, William Rigney, AMTEC's Executive Director, Danine Tomlin, and Project Manager, Craig Hopkins, had the opportunity to conduct lab experiments with Laser-TEC's Light and Optics Explorations Kit (valued at $100). These college instructors turned "students" for a day, were graciously provided two additional kits to take back to their campuses for use in their own labs. This workshop activity was well received and has the potential to positively impact over 250 students according to AMTEC survey data.
