Heartland Consortium STEM Scholars Forum at Indian River State College
On October 24, 2015, over 80 students from multiple High Schools in Central Florida attended the hands-on activities in the Robotics and Photonics labs at IRSC.

In the photonics lab students explored modern applications of lasers and fiber optics, learned about an academic pathways and current employment outlook.

Students eagerly participated in the hands-on activities which included exploration of the dual nature of light.  They explored reflection and refraction of light by using a laser and an acrylic block. By creating colorful patterns with optically active material, sandwiched between 2 polarizing filters, young scientists investigated the wave properties of light in the phenomena called polarization.  They then applied the newly accrued knowledge by designing and building a custom laser-enabled museum security system.  Laser safety was observed at all times.
