Southeast Regional
Center for Laser & Fiber Optics Education, LASER-TEC, hosted its fourth
“Lasers and Fiber Optics” workshop for local STEM educators on November 14,
2014. Thirteen STEM teachers from 4 high schools and 7 middle schools attended
this professional development event.
During the workshop, the educators enhanced their technical knowledge on fundamental principles of geometrical and wave optics as well as their applications. They discovered the latest technology developments in lasers and fiber optics and learned about current and future employment prospects in Southeast region and nationwide. They explored and shared the best practices of integrating optics and photonics into existing classes to enhance students’ outcomes in STEM disciplines.
Among those who participated was Joel Phillips, an electronics engineering technology professor at Bishop State Community College. Bishop State is a new partner college of LASER-TEC, located in Mobile, Alabama. Joel will be hosting a similar STEM educators’ workshop at his institution in April of 2015.
