3rd Graders Learn About Light, Lasers, & Photonics at Jack Britt High School in NC  - May 15, 2017

Monday morning, May 15, 2017, Mrs. Karis brought her third grade class from Stoney Point Elementary to the Integrated Systems Technology Classroom at Jack Britt High School.  The third grade students studied light the week prior to the visit, learning about ROYGBIV (the visible light spectrum) and even making light sabers on May the 4th.

During the visit to the high school, the Integrated Systems Technology II Class introduced some basic concepts of light, laser, and photonics along with the 3-D printer and the Pegasus robot through interactive student made demonstrations.  The “ahs” were heard as students observed the laser pointer beam dance to the music or learned about the angles of incidence and refraction.  They were able to see light bend with water and look through their diffraction grating glasses to see the rainbow of  the florescent lights.  One team of students used the homemade telescope from the kit donated by Laser-Tec (the Southeast Regional Center for Laser & Fiber Optic Education) to explain how it was assembled along with the principles involved for it to operate correctly.

It was an exciting morning and everyone waved good-bye as Mrs. Karis began arranging her students in a line for the return trip.  The students left with a 3-D printed Parrot (school mascot) necklace, diffraction grating glasses, smiles, and memories.
